EVALUATION OF V-ANVIL MICROMETER ACCURACY VIA COMPARISON WITH A COORDINATE MEASURING MACHINEAbstract
This work investigates measurement accuracy when using a V-anvil micrometer to determine the outer diameter of features with uneven lobes or teeth, such as splines, gears, taps, or multi-flute end mills. Conventional micrometers with two contact points are unsuitable for such geometries due to insufficient surface engagement, which can result in significant measurement errors. In contrast, a V-anvil micrometer provides three-point contact, two at the V-anvils and one at the spindle. However, the accuracy of the measurement remains highly dependent on the operator’s ability to align the micrometer correctly. Measurement results were compared with those obtained from a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) using four common standard evaluation algorithms: Least squares circle (LSC), Minimum circumscribed circle (MCC), Maximum inscribed circle (MIC), and Minimum zone circle (MZC). The comparison results show that the micrometer produces values equal to or greater than 0.03 mm compared to those of the CMM, with the greatest deviation observed when using MIC algorithm
