Title

INJECTION MOLD DESIGN FOR COMPOSITE SAMPLES USING SHEET-TYPE CARBON FIBER

Abstract

This study presents the development of an optimized injection mold design for the fabrication of carbon fiber-reinforced composite samples. The primary objective is to enhance surface quality and minimize common molding defects. The methodology involves the use of 3D simulation software to design a two-plate mold for a rotationally symmetrical hollow product, incorporating  a manually inserted core and four interchangeable cavities with increasing dimensions. Flow analysis and mold structure optimization are conducted to refine the design. A two-plate mold is then fabricated based on simulation results. During molding trials, the insert is manually placed to form the initial plastic layer, followed by the application of carbon fiber sheets. Subsequent molding steps involve replacing the cavity with progressively larger ones to encapsulate additional layers, resulting in a final structure comprising four plastic layers alternating with three carbon fiber layers. Process parameters such as barrel temperature, injection pressure, injection time, holding pressure, holding time, and cooling time are fine-tuned through simulation to minimize defects like short shots, voids, air bubbles, and deformation. Mold performance and composite surface quality are evaluated using specialized measurement and analysis methods. The study concludes with practical recommendations for mold design applicable in industrial manufacturing to improve product quality and reduce production costs
