MODELING THE ERROR FIELD AND POSITION ERROR COMPENSATION OF THE ABB IRB120 ROBOT USING IMAGE PROCESSING AND MACHINE LEARNINGAbstract
The absolute positioning error of open-chain industrial robots arises from geometric misalignment, assembly errors, and cumulative drive errors across multiple joint stages. This error is unevenly distributed in the workspace and forms a nonlinear error field at the end tool center point (TCP). This paper proposes a method for modeling the TCP position error field of the ABB IRB120 robot, maintaining the robot's control system structure and equipment usage, only changing the end link trajectory to compensate for the aforementioned error. Two independent end point position measurement channels are used: the robot's encoder measurement channel and a non- contact measurement channel using a high-resolution industrial camera to determine the end point error. Experimental results show that the average error decreased from 0.45 mm to 0.21 mm after compensation, equivalent to an improvement of over 50%. The method is low-cost, easy to apply in practice, and does not require changes to the robot's hardware.
