FORMULATION AND SOLUTION OF THE BALLISTICS PROBLEM FOR A 100MM MORTARAbstract
This paper presents the development of a mathematical model and the solution of the fundamental ballistics problem for a 100mm mortar, considering two respective barrel lengths: 1.45m (standard version) and 1.8m (improved version). The objective is to determine key interior ballistic parameters, including maximum propellant gas pressure and projectile muzzle velocity. These results serve as the foundation for solving exterior ballistics problems to determine the mortar shell's trajectory parameters, such as range, altitude, and time of flight. The mathematical model is established based on the fundamental equations of ballistics, including the propellant gas equation of state, the propellant combustion law, the equations of projectile motion (both interior and exterior), and the energy conservation equation. The system of differential equations describing these ballistic processes (interior and exterior) is solved using numerical methods, utilizing specific input parameters for the 100mm mortar system. The study's results yield pressure and velocity curves as a function of projectile travel distance, identify critical operational values, and determine the trajectory parameters of the mortar shell. The reliability of the computational results is validated by comparison with data from the manufacturer's firing tables for the 100mm mortar. These findings provide an essential basis for performance evaluation, safety assurance, and the design improvement and optimization of the 100mm mortar system
