A MATLAB SIMSCAPE-BASED DESIGN AND EXPERIMENTAL VALIDATION OF A 4-DOF SCARA ROBOTAbstract
This paper presents the research, design, fabrication, and control of a 4-degree-of-freedom SCARA robot for pick-and-place tasks within a predefined workspace. The system is developed based on kinematic modeling using the Denavit–Hartenberg method and is validated through simulation in MATLAB/Simscape Multibody to evaluate motion characteristics prior to experimental implementation. The robot is driven by servo motors and controlled using a Mitsubishi Q-series PLC, ensuring precise, stable, and flexible operation. Experimental results demonstrate that the robot operates reliably, accurately executing the intended task sequence with a repeatability of approximately ±1.0 mm in xy-plane and a Z-axis positioning error in the micrometer range (10 µm). A strong correlation between simulation and experimental results confirms the validity of the proposed design approach. The developed system is suitable for educational purposes and serves as a foundation for future development of intelligent robotic systems in industrial applications.
